Cardigan-S2560

Thanks for the compliments on the top and skirt. I love bright color during the winter months because most days, the sun is behind the clouds.

For this photo, I used S2560 to make a quick cardigan a few weekends ago. The knit print fabric came from Joann's. My daughter reminded me that I had this pattern and it would make up quickly with only the two yards of fabric that I purchased. It's View D with the sleeves cut a bit longer from View A. Plan to wear with top and slacks for work.

Currently, I'm working on a jacket & skirt. The jacket is B5531 and the skirt is from the Vogue pattern mentioned in the previous post. The fabric is a stretch bengaline from Fabric.com. It's been in my fabric collection for maybe a year. Last night as I was pressing darts in the jacket, I noticed that this fabric seemed to have more stretch than I thought. I hope it will wear well once complete. I think I would have chosen a different garment for this fabric. This should be finished by the weekend so I'll have pictures to show.

Hello everyone,

It's been almost a month since my last post. Just can't seem to get going with the blog posting. Hope your new year is off to a great start.

On to sewing. Here is the last project for 2011. Top from B5355, the skirt is V8464. The print fabric came from the Chicago Textile Outlet as I helped my daughter use her Groupon, LOL The skirt fabric was leftover from a long time ago. It's funny I can remember this. But we purchased several pieces of textured crepe before it was called Fabric.com. It worked well for jackets, skirts and slacks. I lined the skirt although the pattern doesn't call for it. It's a straight skirt with darts on the front & back. It has a centered back zipper and narrow waistband. I like this skirt and have made it twice so far. The pattern I've had for over a year perhaps. And the top is a loose-fitting pullover and sash with full-length raglan sleeves. The neckline has bias tape that I made from the fabric. I wore this on New Year's Day. It was comfortable to wear but I think I will most likely shorten the sleeves just a bit.

It has been two months since my last post! Time really flies. I've been extremely busy in non-sewing related activities and lots of things have happened. But I hope to be back at a more regular pace in the new year.

Butterick 5295 Jacket & Skirt

Over the weekend I completed B5295. Also, wore it to church. Not sure why this picture came out so dark.

Here is my review:

Pattern Description: Misses/Misses' Petite Jacket, Top, Skirt and Pants. I made the jacket and skirt. Loose-fitting, lined jacket, hip-length, shoulder pads, inverted center back pleat and long sleeve with bell-shaped hem. Straight skirt with mid-knee, has waistband, back zipper and back slit.

Pattern Sizing: Multi-sized for custom fit (8-22)

Fabric Used: Faille Crepe Suiting 100% Acetate from Fabric.com

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Pretty much.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? This pattern has been in my stash for just over a year. I kept rotating it around and finally decided to sew. I like all the various outfits you can make up with this pattern. One thing I sort of don't care for is the sleeves. I wore this to church and it seemed like the sleeves were a bit much around the bottom. The flared portion. I like the way it looks on the picture though; but wearing it was a different story.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Although I like the pattern, I probably won't sew it again. I do recommend to others.

Conclusion: This is a pattern that is easy to sew. The directions are straightforward and illustrations are clear.

My next project will be a skirt, B5566 view E in a lavender moleskin.

Butterick 5295 Jacket & Skirt WIP

This pattern is now out-of-print. Seems like it just came out last year. But anyway, I've had it on my list for quite some time. I am still working on it and hope to have a much better looking picture tomorrow. All that is left is to hem the lining of the jacket, sew a buttonhole, make sure the shoulder pads are correct (they were not in place in this picture). For the skirt, just the hem is left.

S2229 This was sewn up during the hot hot summer! Just had the chance but I wore it this past Sunday for church and it was perfect in our now cooler temperatures. I had a mishap with the jacket. Not while wearing it, but before I could even put it on. I'm not going to tell you what I did except I had to re-make a section of the back. Totally my fault. But as they say, all is well that ends well. Here is my review:

Pattern Description: Misses' & Miss petite jacket, pants and skirt. Threads sewing pattern collection.

Pattern Sizing: K5(8-10-12-14-16) U5(16-18-20-22-24)

Fabric Used: A suede fabric from Joann's

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the jacket. Although I notice that I forgot to put the little floral design on the front. Also, I usually don't like wrap type skirts. This one was okay.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. I made it pretty much exactly as the pattern directions indicated.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I doubt I'll sew again, but I do recommend. There are so many other patterns I want to make.
Conclusion: Both the jacket and skirt are fully lined. I think an advanced beginner could make this.

B5643, S2466 and B5355

Hi Everyone!

I know it's been several weeks since my last post. I've signed in quite often to update my blog, but would end up reading all the other blogs and kept postponing the updates. I did finish my summer sewing which hasn't happened in a long time. I don't have any leftover patterns cut out that had to be put away, YAY! Because of the cool temperatures, I won't be able to wear these items until next summer. At least there will be something new to look forward to. So here is a few reviews of the last of my summer sewing:

Pattern Description: B5643 Loose-fitting jacket has darted sleeves. Dress is semi-fitted at bust.

Pattern Sizing: A5(6-8-10-12-14), EE(14-16-18-20)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the jacket and the fact that the dress could be worn with or without.
Fabric Used: Not sure what it's called. I remember it came from Fashion Fabrics Club. It's kinda see-through as you'll notice when you look at the dress on the dress form.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. I should have lined it. But since I can't wear it now, I probably will. (I know I will :) )
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Not sure if I'll sew it again. I do recommend to others. If they want something quick and easy.

I don't know why I didn't take a picture with the jacket and dress together.

The two fabrics were picked up a few weeks ago on sale at Joann's. The left is a charmeuse that I will make a tunic and the fabric on the right will be a skirt. Not to be worn together.

This is fabric looks like silk duiponi (not sure what Joann's called it) but I plan to make the dress on the pattern that is a similar color.

I picked up two patterns during the Butterick sale that weekend. I know, I really didn't need more patterns (right) and I've already picked out another cape pattern. I decided this pattern would not work with the fabric I have in mind. More on that in a future post.

This is not a good picture of this dress that will be a top for my granddaughter by next summer. It is S2466.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I've had this pattern since last year and decided to make it this year but still not in time for the hot weather. Hopefully, my granddaughter will be able to wear this as a top next summer season, like it is shown on the pattern envelope.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. I did cut it longer for her. She is tall and will probably be taller. That's why it'll be the top. :))
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes. I will have to make the capri pants.

Pattern Description: B5355 - Misses Tops and Sash. Very loose-fitting, pullover tops A, B, C, D have elbow or full length raglan sleeves (wrong side of fabric will show), carriers, self or contrast sash and shaped hems, neck is finished with purchased bias tape. Purchased bottoms. B: sleeve casings with drawstrings to adjust sleeve length and fullness. C: purchased lace appliques.
Pattern Sizing: Y(XS-S-M), ZZ(L-XL-XXL)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

Fabric used: Georgette print from Joann's.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern: I just like it.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. I did make the bias strip for the neckline from fabric scraps.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I plan to make it again in several fabrics. Not sheer though. I recommend it to others as it is quick to make.

A Few New Fabrics

I received three fabrics from Fabric Mart last week. I ordered the two prints because Carolyn posted that it was a good sale. So I followed her advice and clicked over there and I'm glad I did.

I like the Trendy Rayon Challis prints and will make a couple of dresses. The red one is Embroidered Burnout. Not sure now what it'll become.

A Sorbetto Weekend

As mentioned in the previous post, I downloaded the Sorbetto top. And this must be a world's record for me because I have sewn up two so far. Wore one Sunday.
One of the writers on the Sew Weekly did 7 Days of Sorbetto and that inspired me to go back to the Collette Pattern site and download the top. It's so easy! The first one I used a lightweight print just picked up this year from the red tag section at Joann's. Last year I made a skirt from this same fabric that was not in the clearance section. Anyway, this is so easy because it has only the front and back pattern pieces. You see a sleeve pattern in my picture because some kind person whom I can't think of right now, drafted a sleeve pattern that I will try in my next couple of Sorbettos. There are no facings for the neck and sleeve openings. You can use your own bias tape made from the fabric scraps which I did in both of these tops. Or purchase a matching or contrasting bias tape. You can make several of these in a day if you want to just sew up a few.

I asked my daughter to take a picture of my top and she did just that.

Here's my granddaughter who I think is a 5 year old supermodel! When the camera comes out, she is there with her pose whether she's supposed to be in the picture or not!

Her mom made the skirt and her top is sequins. I don't know where she bought it. I'm not sure of the skirt pattern, but she made two skirts at the same time and I'm sure she'll probably wear the other one next weekend.

The second sorbetto is exactly as the first except I used a remnant leftover from a dress that was sewn two years ago. The fabric came from Fabric Mart. I did not follow the directions for the Sorbetto. Didn't read them. It looks similar to the picture though.

Do I Have Enough Patterns!

I always tell myself I am not going to buy more patterns. Here is what I have on hand:
Two rolling carts that have four sections and are packed to the max. A lot of these patterns I've used and hope to again.

The patterns here I've selected to make in the very near future, like the next week or two or three. Maybe not all of them, but most. These items will complete my summer sewing.

Here are some more I've got nearby.

This stack has some "I might sew soon" styles too.

This is my first pattern cart. Most of the patterns are probably ten years or more. Lots of Vogue designer patterns in this cart.

Some of these are patterns that were laying around that I was going to 'sew' last year during the spring/summer and maybe fall season, and I just put most of them in here. This is a bin that I inherited last year. I have two empty drawers.

The patterns in here are kind of dated, but some I've sewn, and some not, of course. I put them in here because I knew I wasn't going to use them anytime soon. But I revisit from time to time.

And this stack of magazines from Burda, Knip Mode, Octobre, and a few others. There are possibilities here. But the tracing part, I just can't seem to get into.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention (confess), I've downloaded lots. The Sorbetto for instance. I've made two of those already.

So I ask, do you think I have enough.

My answer:

Sadly it's no because I saw a Simplicity top that I think is so cute S2026. Someone had this on their site about two weeks ago. At that time they weren't on the Simplicity site. Also, this jacket, S2024 just saw this when I went to look for the top. Although the jacket reminds me of another they had maybe last year. I guess this is a new category for them. Sew Simple, only $1.99. So no need to wait for a pattern sale. And that's the thing. Without the sales, there is no way I could have accummulated this many. Well maybe, when I was working in corporate America and there weren't sales every other week! I do share my patterns with my daughter who sews, but she's as bad as me. Sometimes we have the same pattern. It's so fun to rush to the pattern sites when they announce their new patterns.

Another UFO - Vogue 1127 - Blouse

I finally finished the blouse from V1127. It's been cut out for over a year and this blog post had been saved for over a week. This was part of the UFO challenge over at Sew Much Talent.

The pattern guidesheet instructs you to make french seams.

There are fabric loops on the neck for the opening above the slit.

Pattern Description: MISSES' JACKET, SKIRT AND BLOUSE: Jacket is fitted, cropped, lined, long raglan sleeves and standup collar. Skirt is straight-fitting, lined and 1" below normal waist with waistline facing, back darts, back slit and invisible zipper. Length is 2" above mid-knee. Blouse is semi-fitted, sleeveless, front and back gathers, back neckline slit, gathered standup collar and ties.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, pretty much.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the style, the neck and collar ties.

Sew Much Talent-UFO Challenge

Sew Much Talent has a challenge that ends tomorrow. I managed to get one thing done so far. Out of Print V2887 that features a jacket and skirt. I made the skirt which is straight, lined and below mid-knee with princess seams.

The waist is faced with ribbon, and there's a back zipper and slit.

The fabric is a home dec suede from Joann's that was suitable for

apparel. I don't have enough to make the jacket out of this but plan to in the future in another fabric and the skirt. Since it's a suede fabric, I consider this a sort of beginning to my fall sewing. I have a knit fabric that I planned to use with this so I may start that in a few weeks. I still have lots of summer sewing I want to complete. The next item from the UFO list is a blouse that is certainly summertime. I hope to complete it tonight for the deadline of the SMT challenge.

I am happy to report that today I was able to find a B5638 along with a few others on my list. Joann's 99 cents sale on Butterick patterns ends Saturday.

When I opened the drawer to find B5177, lo & behold there was OOP B5180 staring right up at me. In my last post, the website says it's an OOP so maybe that was a recent update. But for right now I have enough new patterns to rotate and choose fabric etc. (and change my mind). LOL

A-lined, above mid-knee with neckline, armhole & sleeve variations, back zipper. View C is lined.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope one you were done sewing with it? My version has the sleeves from View B and the dress is View C.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, but I did not follow them. Which could be the reason I had the back facing piece left, lol! I think I may have cut it out by mistake because I certainly did not use it since I lined the dress.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I've always look at this pattern and put it back every spring/summer and this time decided to make it.
Fabric used? I am not sure the exact name of this fabric. I have several pieces in various colors from Joann's clearance section. I have made pants, a suit, and now a dress. I think it's a rayon.
Pattern alterations or design changes you made: The only thing was I used View B sleeves but made the dress of View C.
Would you sew it again? Perhaps but the other view in a different fabric. Conclusion: I like this dress. I look forward to wearing it when the temperatures come out of the 90s.

S4697 I believe is an OOP. I used the pattern before when I made the top & skirt. This time I came across the pattern and decided to make the dress out of a knit fabric that's been moved around in my stash for the past couple of years. This was super easy to sew. There is self fabric binding for the neckline and also the armholes. Gathered middle seam in the bust.
This past Saturday was my granddaughter's 5th birthday. My oldest daughter (in the blue print and who is her mother) said we could wear animal print which somehow was the color scheme. Anyway, here we are in various prints! I think she made her dress the night before. Next day, without any plans at all to dress in the same fabric, we both wore to church what we'd made last year. I think her dress is a Butterick pattern and my top is McCalls. Great minds think alike, LOL!

Coming up on my sewing agenda is to complete a few UFOs since I joined the challenge on Sew Much Talent to get as many done as possible by July 31st. I don't have a lot but enough to keep busy until then.

I've been reading all the other blogs and not posting here. I have been sewing but some things were not going well in my sewing world. This was to be my second dress for the Stay Cool-Stitch a Dress Challenge. Cut it out, even bought lining to match, sewing went well and it's almost done. BOOM!

Cut a hole in the back of the dress with the serger! Not going to bore you with how it exactly happened because I've had more than one disaster lately.

Of course, I left the dress incomplete as I did not do anything more to it. I thought about saving it for something to just wear around the house after I close up the cut (and in case somebody stops by). So I'll look presentable at least.

For something easy and quick, I made up this skirt using B5147. I figured I could handle this without having another mishap. It is lined and has a slit in the back and a back center zipper. The fabric was from a piece leftover from a dress I made last year.

It came out great and all faith is restored, LOL!

A couple other projects are cut out and one already in the process and hope to share those soon.

Easy Top

Thanks for all the compliments on my dress last week. Did you hearthe summer dress challenge has been extended to June 19th. Yay!
So here's one of the tops I finished up last week. Butterick 5496 View A without the elastic in the waist. I wanted a loose fit in the waist and decided to leave that out. In the other top (not shown) I inserted the elastic but I'm thinking about taking it out.

The fabric is lightweight (not sure of the exact name) but I picked this up in Nashville last year when we were on our road trip. It was easy to handle, not sliding all over the place. The neckline is finished with bias tape and topstitched. The sleeves have slits (under) and there are side slits and topstitched hems. This was an easy sew project(s) which was why I was able to sew up two this week.
This is the next project I'll be sewing for the summer dress challenge.

M6073 Finished!

McCalls 6073 This was a smooth process. I finished this up yesterday afternoon and wore to church today. I chose View B, the mid-calf length. My fabric is a stretch jersey from Fabric.com. The dress is a pullover with bodice & skirt gathers into front midriff with elasticized raised waist and topstitched hems.

The only notions needed are thread and elastic. There is elastic in the shoulder seam also. Wearing this was comfortable and it is everything I want in a summer dress. Cool, flowy and easy for a hot day. I most likely will make this one again. Now I'm going to figure out another dress for the challenge :)

McCalls 5625 & 5477

I did not realize a month had gone by since I last blogged. But I'm back again. Here are a few things I've been sewing.
This top was for the Over The Top sew-along from April 1st thru 15th. I finished it after the 15th and have worn it a lot! It was the second black & white print I made during that time. It is McCalls 5625 OOP, View A. I'm not sure what this fabric is called, but it's lightweight and sheer so I wear a cami underneath. It has been perfect for the sporadic warm weather days we've had so far. The fabric came from the Chicago Textile Outlet. The top has front & back gathers, three-quarter length bubble sleeves, with pleats and gathers and a self-belt.

The next project is McCalls 5477 for the jacket, and Butterick 5147 again for the skirt. This jacket pattern is OOP. Each time the season changes, I always rotate this because I just know I'm going to make it. Finally I did. The fabric came from Joann's clearance section. It looks like leather, but isn't. It is a poly-cotton jacquard that I believe is home-dec. It is not heavy at all. Perfect for garment sewing. Wore it yesterday since it was very chilly.

The jacket is semi fitted, lined, hip length and has a notched collar, princess seams, and center back vent. The sleeves are seven-eighths length with a slightly flared lower section. The skirt is a-lined with front & back darts and center back zipper. It is also lined.

I'm not sure that I'd make the jacket again. Perhaps with the shawl collar and long sleeves. The skirt definitely since it seems to be my 'go to' pattern lately.

Several sewing projects coming up but currently I am working on Simplicity 2229 and hope to have photos to show of the completed suit in a day or two.

OOP M5434 & The Fashion Show

OOP M5434 Easy Endless Options Pattern. I used View B which has wrapped fronts, tie ends and three-quarter length sleeves. This was super quick to sew, maybe two hours or less. The fabric is a houndstooth print knit from the Joanns clearance earlier this year. This was my third top for the OTTChallenge which ends April 15th. Maybe I can crank out one more, we'll see.

Below are a few pictures from the Haute Couture Club of Chicago fashion show.

After reading Cennetta's descriptions of their bi-monthly gatherings and meeting discussions, it sounded intriguing. When the opportunity arose, we decided to go. It has been awhile since we attended a fashion show. What can I say. All the garments were beautifully made! Garment after garment down the runway, perfectly fitted to each model! The talent displayed is amazing! My photos aren't the best, but I tried to capture a few. I think that is Cennetta's daughter in the second photo. Visit her blog to get a better view of her garments and descriptions of the sewing involved as well as the fashion show itself. We had a good time!

2nd Top Complete

Two tops in one week!

My second top is M6120 View C using another knit fabric from Joann's. I cut this out on Thursday night during half-time (Chicago Bulls vs. Boston Celtics). I waited until the game was over before I started sewing. I just wanted to make sure the Bulls won that game! LOL

I finished up during the next game on Friday night against the Cavaliers. I've made this top before too. This time I used my serger for entire project. This is an easy sew top and I will probably make it again in the sleeveless version since I have two with sleeves.

Nothing like a challenge to get some sewing done.

1st Top for O.T.T.C.

My first completed top for the Over the Top Challenge. I used this OOP S7013. Fabric came from Joann's a couple months ago. It's a knit from their clearance section. My version does not look like the pattern. I made View F, my sleeves are one-piece and added about 2 inches to the length of the front & back. I will most likely make this again and perhaps use one of the sleeve variations offered on the pattern.

S2899 Jacket & B5147 Skirt

Simplicity 2899 is out of print but still available on their website. Butterick 5147 is still available.

As described on the pattern envelope, I chose the round collar jacket with the straight banded sleeves. The skirt is an a-line with front & back darts and back zipper. It is fully lined. The jacket fabric is a moleskin I've had in my stash. The fabric used for the skirt is a mystery as far a content and where it came from. I can't recall when or where it was purchased. It's embroidered with sequins on what looks like butterflies. I still have quite a bit left and have no clue what I'd make out of it. But it goes well with the jacket.

Here's the back view showing the topstitching. I topstitched around the collar, the back seams and around the sleeve bands.

Next up will be a couple of tops. Fast & easy. I signed up to participate in the Over The Top 15-Day Sewing Challenge initiated by Faye. I'm a couple of days behind. It started April 1st and goes thru the 15th. It's been a busy weekend, non-sewing though.

What I Did This Weekend

There wasn't any sewing this weekend although I started out with great intentions. On Friday night, I participated in the "Friday Night Sew In". I cut out lining for a jacket and skirt which is what I'm currently working on and cut out another skirt. Over the weekend, my plans were to finish the jacket and sew up the lined skirt. Here are a couple of the stops I ended up at on Saturday:

At the mall, I was just hanging out with my girls. I didn't buy a thing. I looked at things of course, but I'm just happy I can make what I want. At Fox & Obel's we stopped to get red velvet cupcakes. I couldn't find a picture of those and didn't think to take a picture of mine before I devoured it. So good, lol! This week I hope to finish that jacket and both skirts and start on other projects by this weekend. We shall see.

These pictures are from two weeks ago. I didn't show them sooner because I don't like the jacket with this dress nor the way it looks on me. I don't know what I was thinking when I made the dress to go with the jacket. But it is what it is. I wasn't thinking about the neckline differences. Oh well, I will have to make something else for both of these. The jacket is McCall's (sorry I don't have the number handy) and the dress is Butterick 5147 in silk dupioni. Funny thing, I wore this to church anyway and got compliments. Go figure.

A Couple of New Fabrics & A Pattern

I really like this jacket pattern. The camel colored jacket first caught my eye. The details of the collar and pocket tabs. But on further examination I also like the other jacket featuring the gathered ruffle. Also favoring the longer length in both styles. There are a couple more patterns
I like: S2229 (the blue jacket) and S2263 (the coral jacket on the model)
These fabrics came home with me from joann's last week when I only went in to get buttons for the jacket in the previous post. They're both knit fabrics used for tops.

Simplicity 2645

Simplicity 2645, View D. in a fabric called textured crepe that I've had for years. The color is called wedgewood. It's funny how I can remember the name of this fabric and the color name. I used the guidesheet directions which I don't usually follow. But because the back had dart details together with a bottom yoke or flounce.

This picture of me was after church last Sunday, so I apologize for the wrinkles. I made contrasting covered buttons from the same type of fabric. Initially, I was going to line the jacket although the pattern does not call for it. I started to make a new black skirt from a piece of the crepe in black but already had one from years ago and still in good condition. It's very possible that I'll make jacket A in a lighter weight fabric for warmer weather.

In The Spring of Things!

In my last post, I talked about the weather. So after the massive amount of snow and then extreme cold temperatures, now there is light at the end of the tunnel. We now have forecasts for the coming week in the 40s and even 50s (with rain). But, God is still Good! All that snow will be almost gone! Yay!

I have two jackets that have been lingering in my sewing room for probably over a month. In the past week, I was able to get them both to an almost finished stage. The first one is McCalls 5670 in a silk that I purchased at Gail K's about three years ago. I finally decided on this pattern and can't wait to complete. The other is Simplicity 2645, a textured crepe from fabric.com years ago when we first discovered them. Just hemming and buttonholes & buttons are all that is needed on both so next time I post, they'll be done!

These jackets will work great during the rest of our chilly weather season. I will be making a dress to go with the McCalls jacket and I have a skirt already for the wedgewood blue.

Snow Day - Sew Day or Two!

It's been forecasted for days. Finally arrived this afternoon. For the Chicago area, they're saying this is the worst snowstorm since 1967. I was just a kid then. Now it's not as fun, LOL!
I'm just getting over a cold that tried to be the flu! So there hasn't been any sewing going on here. Tomorrow I plan to stay inside and sew. Hopefully, I can make some progress because I am behind on where I wanted to be with my projects.
Stay warm and safe everybody since this storm is affecting a lot of people across the nation.

OOP B3189 & NL6838

My 2nd sewing project of 2011 was from OOP B3189. The fabric is a knit mohair look from Joann's. My daughter has the fabric also, and we wore our outfits (not planned) on Sunday to church. The view I used is not exactly on the front of the pattern envelope. My top is like the blue dress on the pattern and my skirt is straight with an elasticized waist. I've sewn this several times in the past, various views. I used a tip from Nancy Zieman from M 6247 on applying the waist elastic like ready-to-wear. I just usually make a casing and pull the proper length of elastic thru and stitch the ends and call it a day. I'm not sure if I'm thrilled with the result of this but it worked for the time being.

The reason I show these two fabrics is that they looked very similar in the photos after being made up (except for the sleeves) but as you can see they're different. The fabric on the left is of the B3189 and the right is another knit fabric but made from NL6838 my first quick 2011 project. I've used both patterns when I want something quick & easy and not too involved.
The night before I cut out a suit that includes a jacket & skirt (not from the same pattern) and last night I pinned another jacket. Off to cut that out and the skirt too.

Simplicity 2767

This pattern is one of the dresses which was part of AJ's Christmas gift. S2767 bubble dress with contrasting collar, waistband and sleevebands.

The fabric is from my stash which I've had for years! I'm glad it was finally used for this dress. She did not want me to take her picture. Instead, she wanted to take 'my' picture with her 'toy camera' lol! As you can see, it is a taffeta dot print. I remember thinking I'd make a blouse out of it. There's still a little left. haha The solid black is more of a satin but perfect to coordinate with this. The underskirt that forms the bubble which is attached to the bottom of the dress is also in the made from the satin. The rosettes on the neck band are of the same fabric as the dress as is the sash ties on back. It also has a center-back zipper.
I was just thinking how old this fabric is! I think Hancocks was called Minnesota Fabrics when I bought this!! This would have been perfect to enter into the fabric stash contest on PR but I'd already completed it when that started. Oh well.

New Fabrics for My Stash

Since I last posted anything that pertains to sewing, I thought I'd ease back into blogging and share a few pics of some of the fabrics purchased recently.

This is a faux suede print that probably will be a coat.

The top fabric has tiny sequins and a trim vertically throughout and second is a knit which I've already made up into a top.

Two more knit prints for tops.

The top piece is a black poplin that has a zebra print jacquard look. It's going to be a jacket. I went back and bought a little more. The purple is another faux suede for a skirt. The fabrics came from a Joann's sale. I have more fabrics from another trip but will share in an upcoming post.

I've made several quick pieces for myself and two dresses that were Christmas presents for my granddaughter.

M6129 is Done!

M6120 View C & D. I wanted sleeves in this and I liked the self-drape from View D. All the tops are the same except for variations for the armholes and in the length. I chose the tunic length. The front has pleats and a midriff. You can see the midriff and the drape in the second photo. I used the long-sleeve version since the temps have changed dramatically here. There is a center back seam. The fabric is from Joanns. It's a stretch knit that I've seen made up on several blogs. This was an easy project. I started on Saturday night and finished up Sunday night. I'm sure I'll make this one again probably the sleeveless version for next summer. And I recommend for a quick and easy project. Finally Finished V8317

Finally, I can show you OOP Vogue 8317. It's been complete for a few days. So here it is.

Pattern Description:

Misses/Misses Petite Top, Belt & Skirt. Fitted, lined top with shawl collar, long sleeves, contrast peplum (I used the same fabric for the peplum) with bias bound edges and front button closures. Belt has hook & eye closures, purchased decorative buckle. Lined skirt has darts, back zipper closure, back flounce, waistband with hook/eye closure.

Pattern Sizing:

AA(6-8-10-12), EE(14-16-18-20)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? yes

Fabric Used: Not sure, it's been in my collection for years. I do remember getting it from Fashion Fabrics Club back in the day, LOL. I think it may be a poly damask, but just not sure of the exact name.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The patterns calls for lace as a contrast for the peplum. I used the same fabric for the peplum and I liked the binding effect that you can see on the edge in the pattern photo. I did not follow the pattern guidesheet instructions for that.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I probably won't sew this again, but I do recommend it if you've had it in your collection like me, LOL. It's still available on Vogue's website.

Conclusion: I've had this pattern for several years and have always rotated it back and forth to the drawer and then back out among my next to sew. I almost forgot to mention that I couldn't find any cute buckles at Joann's. I did find the buttons there and used the smaller ones for the belt area, just for now! LOL! The pattern is rated easy. A beginner may feel intimidated because of the lining and some of the instructions may seem too much. But I think if someone wanted this suit, they'd be very happy with the results.

My Suit Progress

Still working on the Vogue suit, just taking my time. It's not a difficult sewing project. I'm doing a little each evening. Last night I worked on adding the binding to the peplum before it's attached to the rest of the jacket. I don't like how it's turning out. I know why though. It's because of the fabric. So this evening I'll take it off and do it the way I should have in the first place, not the way the pattern guidesheet suggests.

Textile Discount Warehouse

To cas: Textile Discount Outlet is located at 2121 W. 21st Street in Chicago. It's about 2 blks west of Damen and north of Cermak or 22nd Street. The first time we went we took Cermak all the way over off of I-94. This time we got off at Damen from I-55 and drove north to 21st and took a left. It was faster that way. Street parking is available and a very small parking lot is located to the east of the building. The hours are listed on their website, which is under development. It is www.megafabrics.com

My four-year old granddaughter came with us yesterday. My daughter told her she would not be coming anymore, LOL! She wanted to run through the rows of fabric. It's not that type of place (what fabric store is). When we went downstairs, it smells kinda musty. It is an old warehouse. Besides apparel fabrics, they also have upholstery fabrics, loads & loads of trim. There's sewing notions & accessories like belt buckles, buttons & zippers. So have fun.

Working On V8317

Sorry I've been away from the blog. The break that I took from the sewing machine lasted much longer than planned. I'm working on this OOP V8317, using a fabric from my collection. I hope to have complete by this weekend. Below is the back of the skirt. It has a flounce and center back zipper. That's all the work I've done so far.

Today, my daughter and I went to Textile Discount Warehouse. It's been over four years since we were there because today we had a four year old with us. I didn't take any pictures but we went through the whole store and decided that we could have just stayed on the main floor rather than risk walking the steep steps to the upper and lower levels. We each bought only one piece of fabric. To me, it's a bit overwhelming. A lot of their stuff isn't even marked, but you can be sure, they know the price. My daughter really wanted to go there because we'd just seen a segment on 190North, which is a Chicago show that talks about things to do & see in and around the city. Anyway, their prices are good and if you have specific projects in mind, you'll be able to find something to take back home. I bought a black & white print that I haven't photographed yet. Will show soon.

Fall Is On The Way

The latest copy of the Vogue Patterns magazine arrived last week. After looking it over several times to decide what could be on the list of possible purchases, this blouse seemed very familiar. I checked the line drawings and thought, this is it! Off to the stash to find the pattern and here it is. I've had it for maybe six or seven years. Exact same pattern except for the number. This is one to knock off the list.

Here are two of pieces I picked up a couple weeks ago to kick off my fall sewing.The left piece is black with white floral designs to make B5529 view C and the knit on the right is for M6120 view D but with the long sleeves from view C.

I've taken a few days off from the sewing machine and will probably get back to it this weekend.

Alterations

Somehow it always happens. I used to sew for others and even accepted alteration jobs. I stopped long ago even though I'll fix a hem or zipper every now and then for someone. But yesterday after church and as I carried the bag with the little girl uniforms I hemmed the night before, someone else is calling out, "Jackie here's the dress can you have this done by Tuesday!!!!" So I'm giving her the 'what are you talking about, why didn't you call me before now ' stare. She blamed her daughter for whom the alteration is for anyway and she's looking like ooh I hope she'll do it. It's a formal gown that needs taken in on the bodice sides. The girl is so tiny. Anyway, long story short, I hope to do that later this afternoon. But before I could even look at the dress, someone else stops me to discuss taking in a halter top that's too big. I said yes, I'll do it. I guess the only reason I agree to do these types of alterations is because they are simple ones to me. Of course people who don't sew can't see there is a lot of work involved to make it look like you bought it in the perfect size to fit you off the rack. "All it needs is taken in here and that's it." HAHA, What do they know! Also if I wanted to do more alterations on the side, I guess it could happen in a heartbeat because the word gets around. Well wait until they get their bill. LOL Does this sound like venting. I'm not really upset or anything, I'm just saying LOL...

My Birthday Gift

Friday was my birthday and my daughters gave me this for my gift! I haven't tried it out just yet, but I'm looking forward to using it. It's been a busy weekend. I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday. We are relaxing big time around here. Nothing is going on. My husband is taking a nap and I'm watching QVC and playing around on the comptuer.

M6114 Is Done!

This dress was complete the other day. I accidentally erased one of the pictures. Here is the info on this one.

Pattern Description: MISSES' DRESS IN THREE LENGTHS: Pullover, “V” neckline empire dresses A, B, C, D, E have elasticized casing, armhole facing and front neck band trim variations; dresses A, B, C, D lengths are above mid-knee; dresses B, C, D have contrast neckbands; dress E is ankle length.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the various lengths and the gemstone treatment for the neckline.

Conclusion: The gemstones used were purchased at Joann's before knowing what I'd actually use them for. They are nice and sparkly. Although that part was time consuming to sew, I see that I need to move one of the stone, LOL I also had to mark the casing line several times but it was the fabric not taking the color of the tracing paper. But all in all, it was easy to sew and I might sew it again next year in a longer length.

Dress & Jacket Butterick 5460

B5460 was done the week before. But I'd had not sewn the button or buttonhole on the jacket until this past Sunday morning and decided to wear it to church. We just returned from church when this photo was taken. So sorry for the wrinkles. Here is my review:
Pattern Description: MISSES'/MISSES' PETITE JACKET AND DRESS: Loose-fitting, unlined jackets A, B and fitted dress C with belt. A: below waist length. B: 1" below mid-knee and front pockets. C: darts, back zipper closure, 1" above mid-knee length, belt has purchased buckle

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Nothing to dislike.

Fabric Used: An embroidered linen fabric from Joanns that's been in my fabric collection for several years.

Alterations or any design changes you made: I did not make any design changes or alterations except to add about an inch to the bottom of the top front/back bodice pieces and I lined the skirt portion of the dress.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I probably won't sew the dress, but I may sew the jacket again. I do recommend the pattern.

Conclusion: The dress has eight darts just on the front top bodice piece. A total of 22 for the entire dress. If you need to perfect sewing darts, this is a good project to get lots of practice. I liked the shape it gives an otherwise plain dress.
I am still working on M6114. It basically just needs the elastic casing and the hem and some slipstitching along the neckbands. Another B5147 is in the works too...

B5493 The Result of the Friday Night Sew-In

A cute top B5493 is my result for the FNSI. It was all I could handle on Friday night after a busy week of babysitting and working. So here's the review:
Pattern Description: MISSES' TOP: Fitted tops A, B, C, D have front darts, neckline variations, side slit openings and stitched hems
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The fact that it has the various necklines to choose from and it's an easy sewing pattern.
Fabric Used: A sheer poly-print from Joann's.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: I did not make any changes to the pattern. I didn't use bias tape for the armholes, just self-fabric trim.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes
Conclusion: I like this pattern and will make it up several more times. It took longer to complete than anticipated, but it was because I was getting tired. But because I knew that a few hundred others were up sewing too, I kept going and was able to complete the top.

The Friday Night Sew-In

This was my first FNSI. I was prepared the night before by cutting out a top from B5493 View A and a dress using M6114 View C or D. My plan to start around 7:30 p.m. failed but I did manage to complete the top. The dress I'm going to sew this evening. Although there was a minor delay due to having to cut another neck facing, it was fun thinking about all the others who were participating in this sew-in. Hopefully I'll have both projects to show later this evening or tomorrow.
I am looking forward to the next sew-in.
I am technically done with warm weather sewing if you consider I don't have anything else cut out (except the dress) that is considered 'summer'. But my plans are to start a fall project (or two) during the upcoming holiday weekend.

B5147

B5147 complete and already worn last weekend.

Here's the info:

Pattern Description: Easy/ Misses/Misses Petite jacket, top, dress and skirt. I made the dress View D. A-line dress has front and back darts, back zipper and mid-calf length. All garments are lined.

Pattern Sizing: Multi-sized 8-24

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to folllow? I did not use the guidesheet.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the simplicity of this pattern and that I kept seeing it on other blogs. Seems like they were all having fun with this pattern so I decided to finally buy one for myself.

Fabric used: A polyester print from Joann's.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: This pattern calls for lining, but I did not want to line this dress. I traced facings for the neck opening and armholes using the pattern as a guide.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Most definitely will be sewing this again and I do recommend to others.

Conclusion: I think this is a great pattern. Don't know why I didn't buy this sooner, LOL!

Patterns

These are the most recent patterns from the 99 cent sales a few weeks ago. Others that I wanted were not available. I have noticed though, that I've been sewing from patterns that have been in my collection for awhile. But I plan on using these soon. Here's what I got:

Butterick 5415 - I like all the views of this dress. It could be a transitional dress for the season change. Depends on the fabric.

Butterick 5147 - I finally decided to buy this one because of Sheila, LOL I have a fabric for the a-lined dress, View D. After looking at the line drawings on the actual pattern, I can see why this pattern has so many options.

McCalls 6169 in 2 lengths -this may be the pattern I use to kick-off my fall sewing. It's easy to sew and will be great to complete an outfit if (when) the weather turns cool and you don't need a coat just yet.

Although I really don't like to think about cold weather, I know I should be prepared because it's coming. Ugh! LOL

Road Trip

My daughters, granddaughter and I just returned from our whirlwind trip. We stopped at several places along the way to Savannah, GA. There was no agenda except for those stops and we just had a really fun time. We stopped in Nashville, TN at Pancake Pantry to get a taste for ourselves because someone from our church recommended we go. It was very good! That's not my plate, btw, LOL

After our meal, we headed over to Textile Fabrics. They had a vast array of fabrics to choose from. I got the info on this one from Adrienne after reading her blog. I was very disciplined and didn't splurge on fabric, but I did manage to get one piece. I didn't take a lot of time to touch and feel everything, but their fabrics are beautiful and I hope to visit this store again.

In Savannah, of course we had to go check out Paula Deen's Lady & Sons.

The food was delicious, rich in flavor. Yum! Other stops were Tybee Island Beach, Hilton Head, SC, Piccadilly's and Gail K Fabrics in ATL on the way home. LOL ~ It was a great trip!

I Won and A Couple Pattern Reviews

Last week before leaving to go out of town, I found out that I was the winner of Carolyn's giveaway for The Sewing Answer Book. I just had to acknowledge this amd I'm very excited!

Before we left, I had sewn up a few items. For this top I used a very lightweight linen fabric print from Joann's with Butterick 4800, View C. The sleeveless bodice has a v-neck in the front & back, is self-lined using the same fabric. The lower bodice is flared and machine hemmed.
The Pattern Description: Misses Tops, Hip length tops with self-

faced bodices and fabric ties. View A has bust pleats but the other views have darts and other options for the lower bodice i.e., tiered flounces or purchased trim and shaped hems.

Pattern Sizing: AA-6-8-10-12 & EE 14-16-18-20

Did it look like the pattern/drawing on the envelope once you were done sewing with it: Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow: Yes, but I only glanced at them.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern: This is one of the patterns I've had for awhile and never used until now. It always ended up put back in the pattern collection until the next season.
Fabric used: Lightweight rayon/linen type fabric print.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None,except I didn't add the ties.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes/Yes.

Conclusion: Again, I've always liked this pattern. This top was easy to make and carefree to wear.

For this dress I used New Look 6103. The fabric is one of the pieces from my first fabric purchase in six months. I don't think this pattern is still available as I couldn't find in on their site.

Pattern Description: Dress with bodice variations and flared skirt section, center back zipper and optional sash. Coat with large shawl -like collar, long sleeves and inside pockets.

Pattern Sizing: Sizes 6-16, all sizes included

Did it look like the pattern /drawing on the envelope once you were done sewing with it: Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow: Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like everything about this pattern. This time I made the dress with the gathered side accent.

Fabric used: Rayon print from Joann's.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I might sew this one again and I'd recommend it to others.

Conclusion: This was an easy sew project. I've made View A with sash several years ago. It is something I wear again and again. My go-to dress.

Another M6074

Another version of McCalls 6074 sewn up in one evening. This is such an easy dress to put together. I made View B again. The fabric is a knit that I just purchased last Saturday at Joann's. Not sure if I'll make this again before summer is over but it's definitely one of my favorites to sew and will be on the list again for the next summer seaon.

McCalls 3503. An out-of-print pattern I've had several years. Never used it, but decided now would be a good time. I made View B, sleeveless vest/jacket. Has princess seams, sleeve facings and hidden placket for buttons/buttonholes. The fabric is a poly/twill I think, LOL! But there's enough left to either make the pants to go with this or for the jacket I originally planned this fabric for. But note the skirt. (not a good pic) It is a-lined from one of the linen prints I bought at Joann's a couple weeks ago. I think it coordinates perfectly with the solid. The skirt is a simple a-lined with back zipper and facings for the waistline. The hem is machine stitched. It is Butterick 3637, a Diahann Carroll style. Very out-of-print but still stylish.
Fabrics in shades of turquoise seem to be my new favorite color. The fabrics I purchased most recently plus some that was already in my stash are in that color family. Hmmm.

There are several pieces of fabric left on my cutting table. Believe it or not, I actually said in a conversation with one of my daughters the other day, that I think I'll try to sew up the rest of those fabrics for summer and then start on fall/winter sewing. This became an outfit a few weeks ago. I forgot to blog about it. The top has been in my wardrobe for about two years and I'd wear it with slacks or a denim skirt. I had just enough fabric left for a skirt. The first picture isn't really a good one. I took it without the flash. The skirt is an elastic waist with lining and top-stitched hem. Very simple. I've worn it once already already.

When I broke my fabric fast in June, I purchased two prints to make dresses. I had patterns already picked out for the fabric. But, I've been playing around looking through my pattern collection and actually pinned patterns to fabric. Changed my mind which is not good in this case. I haven't sewn the fabric yet. This is what happens if you don't stick to your original plan, at least in my case. I don't want to line one of the dresses, so I picked out another pattern. So today, I am going to cut out one of the dresses. And it's from a New Look pattern that's been in my pattern stash for a few years. It's hot out already and I'm going to go do some quick errands and come back and stay inside and sew.

A Quick Skirt

After completing the dress from S3874, I decided to sew up the skirt from B3037. I've had this pattern for a long time and have used it a lot. It's still available according to the Butterick site.
Pattern Description: Misses/Misses' petite top, skirt and scarf
Pattern Sizing: 14-16-18
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? I'm sure they are but I didn't use them.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? It's easy and quick
Fabric used: Lightweight linen print from Joann Fabrics and I lined the skirt.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None except I just cut it a little shorter than the pattern calls for.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes & Yes
Conclusion: I will use this again and again for a quick skirt project. I think it took maybe an hour to sew this. (if that)

Another Dress Project Complete

I hope everyone has enjoyed the 4th of July holiday weekend. I sure have. I decided to stay in on Saturday and sew. My husband barbequed on Sunday which was a surprise to me. My daughters, of course, were very happy.

After starting last week, I finished up this dress from Simplicity 3874.

Here I am in a couple of rare photos of myself wearing the dress. Took advantage of having one of my photographers around to take pictures. The fabric is a polyester print that I think came from Walmart a few years ago. Originally purposed for a blouse. I like the dress much better.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I really like this pattern. I made the jacket to go with another outfit last year.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The only thing I did was add about an inch to the bottom of the bodice. I tend to be on the short-waisted and for dresses or tops that have a seam or other definition underneath the bust area, I add a little length to that area. Always works out well.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I might sew the other dress view and yes I do recommend this to others.
Conclusion: I definitely like the way the dress turned out and will probably make it again with the sleeved version of the dress.

Simplicity 4273

A couple weeks ago I made the dress from S4273 and wore it the next day. This is the dress I found bias tape to match. It was easy to sew and something I can throw on to wear to work during the summer.

More New Fabric

This morning I went to Joanns to just pick up some bias tape. I didn't want to make it for the next dress I'm going to work on this evening. I was surprised that I found a color to match. So, since my fabric diet is over, I bought these two pieces to make skirts. Both are linen. The black print is lightweight and will need to be lined. It'll be a flowy type skirt. The other print which is a heavier weight will be a straight skirt.

McCalls 5890-Dress

Pattern Description: Fitted top or dress with cap sleeves and princess seams with a mid-knee length and lightly flared. This pattern also includes a wrap jacket and pants.

Fabric is a stretch knit print purchased about a year ago from the same Walmart in Mississippi mentioned in a previous post.

I am going to have to take this in more in the sides of the top portion to make it 'fitted' as stated on the pattern. Otherwise, I like the length and the cap sleeve. This is another easy dress for summer. No ironing of this fabric will be necessary. Just wash, hang to dry and go! Just what I like!

Knip Mode July 2010

My new found pen pal Ruta, sent the July,2010 issue to me. I was so excited when she asked if I was interested in recieving it. I've read about Knip Mode on several blogs but never thought I'd actually get one of my very own, LOL I appreciate this so much. Now I have to make something. There are several projects that I'd like to work on. Also, there was the Fast Fashion insert included with this issue and my daughter was very intrigued by that. Thanks again Ruta!

First Fabric Purchase for 2010

Earlier this year I listed goals and one was not to purchase fabric until June. Well, I managed to keep that goal. I didn't buy not one yard. It was easier than I thought it would be. I did look whenever I went to a fabric store or receive those emails for sales. It was fun go through what I had on hand. It also forced me to look at some of the patterns and pair them up with my fabrics. Or give them away. I did my first ever giveaway on my blog a few weeks ago and it worked out quite well. I hope to do that again in the future.
Here are the first two pieces I've purchased this year and they will be dresses. I haven't chosen exactly which patterns yet, but I've narrowed it down to three choices. If time permits, I will stop by Vogue Fabrics tomorrow, LOL. I've intentionally stayed away from there.

McCalls 6074

When I first saw this pattern on Faye's blog, I knew I wanted it. She talked about how easy it was to sew and how you could make 12 in a day (something like that) LOL. The pattern says it's a "One-Hour Dress". It's a pullover and has three length variations. An elastic casing detail below the v-neck. There are other options for trims and cap sleeves. It took me two evening to finish because I worked on something else prior to starting on this. But I love the simplicity of this dress and it will be great for the hot weather we are about to get this weekend. The fabric is a lightweight knit from Fabric.com that the oldest daughter didn't want. Remember, I haven't purchased any new fabric when I sewed this. (More on that later). But I'll probably make a few more of these dresses. That's what I love about reading other sewing blogs because I usually overlook something. Thanks Faye! McCalls 4382

Another top from fabric that was given to me. I'm not sure if this pattern is still in print. Probably not since it's been in my pattern collection for quite some time. But it's an easy project that can be finished in an afternoon or evening. I made View A with a v-neck and long sleeves. The neckline has facings. Not anything complicated here. I hemmed the sleeves and the bottom of the top by machine. The fabric is a lightweight crepe. The photo of the top itself isn't a good one. When I showed this to my daughters over the weekend, the one who gave this fabric to me said that I was supposed to make things for her from the fabrics she didn't want! HA! Maybe I'll let her borrow it, LOL

OOP Butterick 3431

I've had this pattern for many years. It's a very easy style and I remember making the sleeveless top and pants in a similar color. The top is loose-fitting, has side slits and a narrow hem. The pattern called for shoulder pads which I did not apply and it has tie ends for the closure. The pants, which I did not photograph, are wide legged and an elastic waist. The fabric used is from my collection. It's a rayon twill that I purchased many years ago from Walmart in Grenada, Mississippi. They used to have really nice fabrics there whenever we in town to visit family. I could load up on some good pieces. The plan was to wear this outfit two weeks ago when my oldest daughter took me to an Erykah Badu concert in downtown Chicago. Well, in my usual "last minute decision self" on what to wear, I didn't have the time to finish it for that occasion. Ready for my next event!

Pattern Description: Women's pants, skirt and shirt with sash. I made the shirt-View A. The front and collar are all one piece. There are upper & lower back pieces that have pleats that meet when sewn together which give a little shape to the back. The sleeves for this version have bands that when applied to the sleeve form a vent.

Conclusion: I like the easy styling of this pattern and that it could be sewn with no major changes. It'll look great with slacks or a straight skirt.

This is OOP S4525 view A has notched detail on top front center, back has center back seam. The top has skinny straps and side zipper opening and stitched hem. The fabric is a silk piece I've had in my fabric collection for several years and never knew what I would do with it because it was less than 1 1/2 yards. I've wanted to use it for awhile and I've had this pattern too and so one day it just clicked to use it for this. It was a very easy project to complete and I might make it again, but this pattern has several views. I've made the skirt before and it's very easy, breezy to wear.

I did keep up with reading though and found lots of inspiration. Also, purchased a few patterns but have not brought any new fabrics into my house so far this year. That has been easier than I thought. Sure, I've looked at the fabric sites and even in the stores, but maybe next week I may break my fast and buy something.

V8567 Complete

Thanks to everyone for the commentss on my coat. I've worn it several times and received lovely compliments.
V8567 is a finished project finally. It took longer than necessary to finish this one up. This was not a difficult project at all. Here is my review:

Description: Jacket,top, dress, skirt and pants. I made the jacket and skirt. The jacket is lined to the edge, has front & back darts, sleeves with darts and topstitching. The skirt is cut on the bias and has elastic waistline casing and below mid-knee length.

Pattern sizing: 16-18-20-22 I cut size 18.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes it did.

Fabric: Not sure, but I think it's a rayon something. I have several colors in my fabric collection.

Were the instructions easy to follow: Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern: I loved everything about this pattern. I've wanted to make it for a long time.

Would you sew it again, would you recommend it to others: I highly recommend it, but I have many other patterns in my stash I want to try. I probably won't make this one again.

The pictures below show some of the details described in the pattern. This first picture is not a really good one. I know everyone would like to see the finished projects on me. But it's so easy to take a picture on the dress form. I am planning to do better in that respect though in the future.

My Coat That's Actually McCall's 5718

I finally finished McCall's 5718. In the previous posts, I referred to this as a Butterick pattern when it clearly says M5718. I don't know what I was thinking. I just had to laugh out loud when I looked at my blog. But here is my review of this coat. Pattern Description: Loose-fitting lined jacket or coat has yoke, stand or turned down collar, full-length raglan like sleeves, side front seams w/pockets, buttons & buttonhole closures. The sleeves for View C have cuffs and the pattern calls for multiple rows of topstitching which I did not do. (still may do it though) Pattern Sizing: 18-24 I made the 18

I have to say that I haven't purchased any new fabric so far this year, except for linings, (which doesn't count in my book). I am sewing from fabrics in my collection. This was one of my goals to not buy any until June. I've been tempted, of course. My daughter frequently sends swatch pictures from the various fabric sites along with photos from Nordstroms or Bloomingdales ,of what the fabric could be made into. So for now, I'm content to not buy anything. She has gifted fabrics to me (the latest just last week)! Now if i can just make good on No. 5 of the goal list.

New Projects On The Cutting Table

Here is a preview of my upcoming projects:

B5718, already cut and ready to go. I'm making the short version (red jacket) I think it's view B. Vogue 1100, there is enough of each of these fabrics to make two full suits, one houndstooth and one in the solid. But I thought about the jacket in the houndstooth and the skirt in the solid. What do you think?

Vogue 8567, the skirt & jacket. Simplicity 2636, the top with sleeves. I have several pieces of black fabric to make the pants.

I've wanted this coat for quite some time in this fabric. New Look 6736

This purple faille from fabric.com will be a jacket and skirt, Butterick 5294

And this one will be OOP Butterick 3638, a royal blue for the jacket and a solid black skirt (fabric underneath the pattern).

I know these two fabrics look almost the same shade on my monitor, but here they are side by side.

I am not sure what I want from the last two pieces. I love animal prints. It could be a lightweight coat for Spring. When I first pulled it out, I thought about a skirt.

I think when this one was originally purchased, I wanted it to be a skirt, long and breezy. It is a satiny, crinkle type with strands of ribbon and specks of clear sequins sewn throughout. I may have to come back to this one later.

M5768 Tunic-Complete

I used M5768 ViewB. The fabric is a lightweight crepe print I purchased from one of Joann's red tag clearance sales last year. It's a loose-fitting pullover tunic with front and back neck bands. There is an inverted pleat on the front below the neck band and the sleeves are slightly flared with sleeve bands and side slits. Started this project on Saturday evening and finished up Sunday night. I was thinking about adding something for the neck and sleeve bands just to add a little touch of contrast although the fabric is very vibrant. We'll see.
Here's a closeup of the sleeve band and the side slit. I have a very dark blue denim that would look great with this. The great thing about this tunic is I can wear it with even in the summer with white pants. Happy sewing!

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I don't usually read the guide sheet that comes with patterns. I should have paid more attention to this one because on the sleeves, I left off the facing and just sewed up the bottom the way I saw fit.
Would you sew it again? Yes
Would you recommend it to others? Yes
Conclusion: I like this and will try it again soon.

This is the pattern that seemed to take forever to complete. I started this before the holidays and then I must have been caught up in the preparations for that and just put this aside.
Pattern Description: Loose-fitting un-lined jackets, shawl collar, elbow length dolman sleeves, pockets & topstitching detail. Close-fitting skirt with top-stitching details and back zipper and slit.
Pattern Sizing: 8-24
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Although the skirt is straight, it has design details and top stitching that I really like.
Fabric Used: Double knit from Fabric.com
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None
Would you sew it again? Yes, I plan to make the longer length jacket.
Would you recommend it to others? Yes
Conclusion: This pattern is rated easy. I think any figure type could wear this because of the loose-fitting top/jackiet.

My daughter's blouse is M5929 is out of a peachskin type fabric from her extensive stash. The solid contrast is something my mother gave to her and it matches perfectly with the blue in the blouse fabric.

Pattern Description: Fitted shirts darted front and back, front band, ruffles and shaped hemline; view A has stand-up collar, below elbow length sleeves with sleeve band; view B has collar and collar band, full length sleeves with placket opening and cuffs; dresses A, B have sleeves gathered at cap and lower edge.

Pattern sizing: 6-20

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern enveloope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

Fabric used: Striped peachskin and a satin remnant.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Just contrasted the front band, collar and cuffs.

Would you sew it again: This is the second time she's made this shirt. The other was a solid yellow.

Conclusion: My daughter made this up in two evenings (I think). She was on a sewing kick to make a wardrobe in a week that I'd told her about from reading the Stitcher's Guild. This was part of that. She had two tops and two bottoms in her plan.

So that's it for now. Off to start on more sewing projects.

It seemed to me that it was an uphill climb to complete V8605 but I made it thru and have worn the outfit already. I will post photos tomorrow. It was not a difficult sewing project at all, just my procrastination. I started working on S2560 last night and should be done soon. Yesterday I went out to Joann's to pickup a couple Simplicity patterns and a few other notions. I looked at their fabrics but did not purchase anything. I am trying to stay true to my goal of not buying new fabrics until June. The patterns I picked up are S2452 & S2455. There is plenty of fabric to choose from in my collection so I should be content with enough choices...

My Sewing Goals

Thank you for all the nice comments. My mom was thrilled to get to wear her outfits.
I've been reading about the sewing goals of other bloggers for the new year. I had thought about my own back in late November and that I'd like to make changes in my wardrobe. It always seems to me as if I don't have anything to wear or I always just pick from the same things. But in order to make the changes I want, I need to make plans and commit to them. Not that things can't change. So for this year:
1. Add suits, dresses and slacks to my wardrobe.
2. Make use of some of the patterns I've acquired. I purchased some Lekala patterns a couple months ago, so I want to make those up too. This should help with No. 1.
3. It's been a long, long time since I made anything with welt pockets. So it's time to include this and other enhancements in my sewing again.
4. I plan not to purchase any new fabric until June. With the exception of linings and anything I may need to complete a garment.
5. Spend less time on the computer so I can get my new wardrobe made (smile!) I saw this on Linda's blog and I agree that my sewing time could only be helped if I did this too.

I hope everyone is enjoying the new year. It's been my intention to post a sort of recap of 2009 but each time I log into blogger, it won't let me post pictures. So I'll talk about other sewing related things I've done recently.
During the month of December, I didn't sew any new garments. However, I did alterations for my mom. She had two suits she wanted changed. One was a short-sleeved jacket that and wanted long sleeves and the skirt taken in; and the other was a knit jacket where the sleeves were unlined and she wanted them lined. My mom used to sew, so she went off to Vogue Fabrics and the sales clerk helped her choose a fabric for the new sleeves to match the jacket. Since not all shades of black fabric aren't the same, they did a very good job in matchining it up. It is a lot of work to take apart things to alter or whatever which is why I am such a procrastinator when it comes to this type of project. But I got it done in time for her to wear to church.
With that project done, my next was to line the sleeves for the next jacket which was red. With both jackets I used the current sleeve as my guide. I did not remove the sleeve in this jacket though. I made a paper pattern after outlining the sleeve and then proceeded to handstitch it in place after sewing the seam on the machine. This took an entire evening but I was able to deliver the jacket for the next church wearing, LOL!
She was very pleased and so am I. I do have one more skirt to take in and I will do that soon.
If you haven't heard already, the new McCall's & Simplicity patterns are up on their sites. I not real excited but only like one of the McCall's patterns which is M6028. From what I've read, everyone seems to like that one. I may buy this next time I'm at Joann's. And the two Simplicty patterns are S2443 & S2452.

MOT 5 & 6

Over the weekend, I managed to complete the last two tops of the MOT Sew-A-Long. It has been so much fun! I changed around the pattern choice for this fabric. I used an OOP S7013. My top does not really look like any of the view options on the envelope. I just took what I wanted from the pattern pieces and made a top with two-piece sleeves, it has a neck facing and top stitched hems. I used the sleeves from ViewA but did not leave the seam open nor did I make a drawstring closure. The front & back is from View F and the length of the top is about 1 inch longer than the pattern. This fabric has been in my stash for a very long time. I am glad I finally got a chance to use it.
My next top also OOP S5956. The fabric has been in stash for quite some time and I never really knew what to do with it because there was not even 1 1/2 yards of fabric. It was a piece I picked up probably from Joann's red tag section back before it became the place we'd always look for fabrics first (my daughter & I) when going to Joann's. Very quick and easy.

This is an up close view of draping on the front neck area of the top. When I described this top on the Month of Tops blog, I called it cowl neck. That just shows how old-school I am. LOL!
I had lots of fun participating in the Month of Tops Sew-A-Long thanks to Faye. Now to whip up a few bottoms for my tops!

B5260 & NL6838

B5260 in this black & white knit print, View A. This took about two hours, if that, to sew up last night. When I first came across B5375 a See&Sew pattern, I really liked the top. Since those are never on sale, I searched to see if one of their regular patterns was similar. I found 5260 with exactly the same line drawing and description etc. So I buy it at one of the 99 cent sales. This top is made from a knit from stash. It is an a-lined, pullover with topstitched hems. The top has several neckline variations to choose from. I might make this one again and I highly recommend it.

The next top is NL6838 and this knit has gold diagonal lines. I've had this fabric in my stash for over nine years. This is a very easy top to make and I chose View B with elbow length sleeves. There is a center back seam. This may be an out of print pattern.
I have to say I am very happy I've been able to complete four tops so far this month! Now to add some bottoms to the wardrobe at this same type of pace. That would be exciting! We shall see.

Top #2 - S4605

Simplicity 4605 is my second top for the Month of Tops. I've made this before and I think this pattern is now an OOP. I used a knit from my stash that I purchased from Walmart. It was easy to sew and I like it. The top has neckline variations and I used the view with the neck band. The sleeves are 3/4 length. I used topstitching for the sleeves and the bottom hem. It looks close to the pattern photo but I used a few gathering stitches in the front & back neck areas to make the neck band fit. This is why during the sewing process of this top, I feel I should have used another fabric or a different pattern for this. But I have another top for my wardrobe.

Finally posting pics of the coat.

It was very easy to sew. It's unlined and has an attached scarf/collar. The sleeves are two-piece and there are pockets in the side seams. There is lots of topstitching. I have no idea what type of fabric it is. A mediumweight navy and you can't tell much difference from the right/wrong sides. I've had this in my stash for quite some time and pretty sure I bought it from Joann's.
The first photo is of the scarf/collar tied once in front. and the second photo has the scarf/collar one side draped over the shoulder. Both of these ideas are shown on the pattern envelope. I did not get to wear this because the weather has become too cool by the time I fininished. I think this will look nice with slacks or jeans and a turtleneck or plain sweater underneath. If we get another day that is almost 60 degrees, I could wear it! But I do look forward to making another but probably not until spring.

Here are the patterns/fabrics for the next projects for tops this month:

NL6838 View A already cut. A knit fabric that has been in the stash and finally going to be used.

I will use M5978 again for another twinset from stash knit that has been there for a long time!

The top from S4605 I've sewn before and pulled this fabric out of stash to use for it.

M5768 is a pattern I've had for maybe a year and I always pull it out and then change my mind on fabric to use with it. This time I will use this bold print that hasn't been in my stash very long at all. I just purchased from Joann's in the Red Tag section in early October.

This is another knit which was in the Joann's Reg Tag (different sale) recently.

My plan is to stay in and sew all day Saturday! Stay tuned :)

B5185 #1 Month of Tops

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Nothing to dislike except how the fabric hangs at the bottom front opening. Probably is the choice of fabric.

Fabric Used: Stretchy Knit.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None

Would you sew it again? Yes perhaps in a knit that is not as stretchy or slinky.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes

Conclusion: This is an easy to make top.

THE MONTH OF TOPS SEW-A-LONG

McCall's 5978 and A Few Other Projects

This past week, I was able to complete McCall's 5978. The pattern description is: MISSES' CARDIGANS AND TOP: Cardigans have three-quarter or full length sleeves and stitched hems; cardigan A has purchased lace trim; cardigan B has jewel stones; cardigan C has pearls; cardigan D has self-fabric appliques; sleeveless top E has narrow hem finishing at neck, armhole and lower edges.

Pattern Sizing: (xsm, sm, med) (lrg, xlrg)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? I barely looked at them.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the fact that this is something I can put together quickly and have lots of options for my wardrobe

Conclusion: I will definitely make this again!
One thing this season that I've hardly ever done was to complete all the projects I had cut out for summer. Below are the last two outfits I made and wore just before the official end of summer. The white suit, however was worn I think on the first Sunday after the official start of Fall.
The print dress is Simplicity 3864 and the jacket is Neue Mode The print fabric was purchased from Fashion Fabrics Club a couple of years ago and the green solid for the jacket came from a Joann's Red Tag sale maybe last year.

The jacket for the white suit is Simplicity
2558 made with fabric I purchased about two years ago in Atlanta's Gail K's fabrics.

Up next to

complete is Butterick 5185 and then McCalls 5987.

Hi Everyone!
I know it's been awhile since my last post on Sept. 5th! You know, I've been reading everyone's blogs and not posting or commenting. I can see how it is easy to just not do it. But anyway, I've been sewing a little here and there. My main machine is having some problems. I thought it was the foot pedal because that's what it usually is. So after receiving a new one, the machine is still doing the same thing (won't sew at a normal speed). It must be something else. In the meantime, I pulled out my mom's machine this weekend and by the time I sat down to actually sew, the only thing completed was a tank top that will go with a cardigan that I could have sewn up but didn't. It is McCall's 5978. I may work on that tonight.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments from my recent posts. Thank you all that take the time to read my blog! I've been doing this for just over two years and I am amazed I've been able to keep up, LOL!
I received a question from Maz who asked about when to apply the interfacing to McCalls 5883:

In answer to your question, yes, attach the interfacing to the facing piece that you've cut from your fashion fabric. Follow the instructions on the guidesheet and with right sides together, you will sew your interfaced fabric piece which is your front & back facings to the neckline of the front/back of your top. Trim your seam (not too close to your stitching) and then clip the seams. View the guidesheet illustrations and it should give you an idea where to clip. Again being careful not to clip into your stitches. You're almost done!! Hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out and if you have anymore concerns. Good Luck & Happy Sewing!

New Rainbow Fabric Store

A great way to start out the weekend! Our Saturday outing began with a first-time visit to New Rainbow Fabrics located at 612 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago.
We were the only customers so we had the store to ourselves except for the owner and two employees who greeted us and were very nice.

Here are a few pictures of the inside of the store.
The fabric selection ranges from silk dupioni, african laces, woolens, cottons, stretch jerseys, just about everything. The prices are great!

I think the lowest price fabric was $3.99. There was probably something a little lower priced in fabrics, but actually the 45" linings were $1.99/yd in lots & lots of colors. The 60" linings are $2.99/yd. I saw interfacing for $1.29/yd. There are no patterns here, just fabric. So if you go, you need to have an idea of what yardage you'll need for various projects. They have cone thread and buttons (I only saw three types) that are sold individually. My daughter was trying to grab my granddaughter just as I snapped that photo. (BTW-Granddaughter had a ball walking/running the length of the store!)

Vogue Fabrics is right across the street and Fishman's Fabrics is around the corner. We didn't go to either one on this day. We've been to both before. It was a good day!

Butterick 5313

I made Butterick 5313 View B. This did not work for me after it was made. I did not like how I looked wearing this dress. The pattern was easy to put together and the fabric is a knit from my stash. I will probably give this to the Goodwill and hope that someone else will like it and look nice. I still think it is a cute pattern though.

Simplicity 4695

I made Simplicity 4695 a couple weeks ago, and it has several options for a top. Either with sleeves and a collar or without. I chose to make it sleeveless and forgot to put the collar on! LOL It has bust darts and side slits and the sleeves and neck have facings. The fabric is of an unknown content from my stash and was ok to work with except it seems to like wrinkles. I've worn it with a skirt and have a few others I can pair it with. I'll probably make another top using this pattern but this time with sleeves and collar and also the pants or skirt.

Plans for Saturday

It's Friday night and I'm on the IM with my oldest daughter making plans for tomorrow. We will go to Rainbow Fabrics. It is our first visit and we're looking forward to it. I hear it's a small store with a very nice but limited selection and reasonable prices. Also, it is across the street from one of Vogue Fabrics locations and around the corner from Fishman's Fabric. I've heard very good reviews and will report back what we see!
